[English] Won hits two-year high as exporters sell dollars

The Korean won closed daytime trading at 1,335.10 per U.S. dollar on Oct. 12, down 3.40 won from the previous session on Oct. 8. It was the lowest daytime close since Oct. 4, 2024, when the rate ended at 1,333.70 won.

The rate fell as low as 1,333.20 won during the session as companies that earned dollars from chip exports kept converting them into won.

Foreign investors sold a net 2.02 trillion won worth of KOSPI shares on the day, as reports during the holiday that OpenAI's annual revenue fell short of market expectations fueled doubts about AI growth. When foreigners convert the proceeds into dollars and leave the market, dollar demand rises and pushes the rate up.

The won nonetheless stayed strong. Dollars that Korean exporters converted after settling their sales appear to have outweighed the foreign selling.
