원/달러, 미국 물가 상승에 6.30원 상승

10월 15일 원/달러 환율은 전 거래일(14일)보다 6.30원 상승한 1,344.60원에 주간 거래를 마쳤다.

원/달러는 미국 물가가 예상보다 많이 오르며 금리 인상 우려가 커지자 달러 가치가 높아지며 상승했다.

미국 노동부는 14일(현지시간) 9월 소비자물가지수(CPI)가 1년 전보다 3.7% 올랐다고 발표했다. 시장 예상치(3.6%)와 8월(3.4%)을 모두 웃돌았다. 물가를 잡기 위해 미국 연방준비제도가 금리를 더 올릴 수 있다는 우려가 커졌기 때문이다.

외국인 투자자들은 금리 인상 우려에 뉴욕증시에서 반도체주가 급락하자 코스피 시장에서 3조원 넘게 순매도했다. 코스피는 7.57% 하락한 5,554.22에 마감했다. 장중 8% 넘게 하락하면서 서킷브레이커(지수가 급락할 때 20분간 거래를 멈추는 조치)도 발동됐다. 외국인 투자자들이 주식 매도금을 달러로 바꿔 나가면서 원/달러 상승폭이 커졌다.

다만 코스피 하락폭에 비해 원/달러 상승폭은 크지 않았다. 민경원·임환열 우리은행 연구원은 반도체 수출 기업들이 벌어들인 달러를 꾸준히 원화로 바꾸고 있어 환율 상승을 누르고 있다고 분석했다.

The Korean won closed daytime trading at 1,344.60 per U.S. dollar on Oct. 15, weakening by 6.30 won from the previous session on Oct. 14.

The won weakened as the dollar strengthened on growing concerns about U.S. rate hikes after inflation came in higher than expected.

The U.S. Labor Department said on Oct. 14 (local time) that the September consumer price index (CPI) rose 3.7% from a year earlier, above both the market forecast of 3.6% and August's 3.4%. The data raised concerns that the U.S. Federal Reserve could raise rates further to curb inflation.

Foreign investors sold a net of more than 3 trillion won on the KOSPI market after chip stocks plunged on Wall Street amid rate-hike worries. The KOSPI closed down 7.57% at 5,554.22. A circuit breaker, which halts trading for 20 minutes during a sharp drop, was triggered after the index fell more than 8% during the session. As foreign investors converted their stock sale proceeds into dollars and moved them out, the won's losses widened.

Still, the won's decline was modest compared with the KOSPI's plunge. Woori Bank researchers Min Kyung-won and Lim Hwan-yeol said chip exporters steadily converting their dollar earnings into won are keeping a lid on the exchange rate.
