원/달러, 미국 연준 의장 발언에 13.20원 하락

10월 16일 원/달러 환율은 전 거래일(15일)보다 13.20원 하락한 1,331.40원에 주간 거래를 마쳤다. 원/달러는 미국 연방준비제도가 추가 금리 인상을 서두르지 않을 것이라는 해석이 나오면서 달러 가치가 내리자 하락했다.

케빈 워시 미국 연방준비제도 의장은 16일 태국 방콕에서 열린 국제통화기금(IMF) 총재와의 대담에서 "나는 통화정책 회의의 결정을 미리 예단하지 않는다"고 밝혔다. 9월 소비자물가지수(CPI)가 예상치를 웃돌아 추가 금리 인상 우려가 커진 상황에서, 시장은 이 발언을 금리 인상을 서두르지 않겠다는 뜻으로 받아들였다.

외국인 투자자들은 코스피 시장에서 3428억원을 순매수하며 9거래일 만에 매수로 돌아섰다. 외국인 투자자들이 국내 주식을 사기 위해 달러를 원화로 바꾸면서 환율 하락폭이 커졌다. 코스피는 2.05% 상승한 5,668.05에 마감했다.

은행권의 한 외환 딜러는 다음 주에는 미국 경제 지표 같은 큰 일정보다 국내에서 달러를 사고파는 물량이 환율을 좌우할 것이라며, 원/달러가 1,320~1,360원 사이에서 움직일 것으로 전망했다.

The Korean won closed daytime trading at 1,331.40 per U.S. dollar on Oct. 16, strengthening by 13.20 won from the previous session on Oct. 15. The won gained as the dollar weakened on views that the U.S. Federal Reserve will not rush further rate hikes.

U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said during a conversation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director in Bangkok, Thailand, on Oct. 16 that he does not prejudge the decisions of monetary policy meetings. With concerns over further hikes running high after September consumer price index (CPI) data came in above expectations, markets took the remark as a sign that the Fed is in no hurry to raise rates.

Foreign investors bought a net 342.8 billion won of shares on the KOSPI market, turning to net buying for the first time in nine sessions. As they converted dollars into won to buy Korean stocks, the won's gains widened. The KOSPI closed up 2.05% at 5,668.05.

A bank currency dealer said domestic dollar supply and demand, rather than major events such as U.S. economic data, would drive the exchange rate next week, and forecast that the won would trade between 1,320 and 1,360 per dollar.
