[English] KOSPI falls for sixth straight session on foreign selling

The KOSPI closed at 6,008.81 on Oct. 14, down 26.54 points, or 0.44%, from the previous session on Oct. 13. It was the index's sixth consecutive daily decline.

Early in the session, buyers flocked to large chipmakers whose shares had become cheaper after a drop of more than 5% the previous day. On Oct. 13, the KOSPI fell 5.46% to 6,035.35 after China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) said it would release next-generation server DRAM within the year. Foreign investors were net buyers of 19.6 billion won as of 9:30 a.m., and the index rose as high as 6,190.65.

But foreign investors turned back to selling, and the index gave up all of its gains. Ahead of U.S. inflation data, investors sold chip shares that had risen to lock in profits. Foreign investors sold a net of more than 1 trillion won on the KOSPI market, extending their selling streak to seven sessions. The index fell as low as 5,944.65 during the day. Samsung Electronics closed unchanged at 232,000 won, while SK hynix fell 1.66%.

Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said a rebound that recovers part of the index's steep losses is possible. For a rebound to last, however, investors need to regain confidence that chipmakers can keep earning steady profits over the next few years, Han added.

Markets are waiting for the U.S. September consumer price index (CPI), due at 9:30 p.m. Korea time. September CPI is expected to rise 3.6% from a year earlier, faster than August's 3.4%. If prices rise more than expected, concerns over further rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve could grow, and foreign selling may continue.
